Sport Fishing

The Magical South of Tamaulipas is a paradise for sport fishing's lovers. This region, in addition to border with the Gulf of Mexico has numerous rivers, dams and lagoons where there are a wide variety of species among them Tarpon, Marlin, Jack Crevalle, Black Bass, Snook, Atlantic Mackerel and Atlantic Bonito. This sport has gained great acceptance among its participants and has motivated both small and large entrepreneurs to establish camping grounds along dams and rivers that have all needed infrastructure to provide a good service to all visitors.

Among the main dams within the region are the Presa República Española a.k.a. Presa El Sombrerito in the Aldama Municipality, the Presa Emilio Portes Gil located in the municipalities of González and Xicoténcatl and the Presa Ramiro Caballero. There are also camping facilities along the Tigre River at Barra del Tordo. All of them have boat ramps and bait sales from the inhabitants of nearby towns. Sport Fishing is a tradition at the Metropolitan Zone formed by Tampico, Madero and Altamira. Due to its geographic location near the Gulf of Mexico, and by its surrounding Pánuco and Tamesí rivers, its numerous lagoons like the Laguna del Chairel, the Laguna de Champayán and a wide number of creeks and waterways; that allow the capture of a great variety of species.

The Region has also had an important role in the development of the sport fishing in Mexico. As an example, the International Tournament for the Sport Fishing of Tarpon, initiated at the Club de Regatas Corona on March, 1942, being the first club of the Mexican Republic that organized an event of this nature, and that has only been interrupted once from 1974 to 1979 due to the scarcity of the species.

Another club that has played an important role in the development of sport fishing in the region has been the Club de Yates de Tampico, located on the riverside of the Pánuco River, allows for resupply and docking of small boats to yachts and sailing ships up to 50 feet long. It provides these services to its members and also to those that visit Tampico and travel on their own ship.

Annually, several tournaments are held of great tradition in Mexico and southern United States. Some of them are the Tarpon Fishing Tournament by the Club de Regatas Corona in the month of August and the fishing tournaments of Tarpon and Marlin held by   the Club de Yates Tampico in July and August. Added to the great number of tournaments of various species that both clubs organize like the snook during April and May, the Atlantic Mackerel, Jack Crevalle and Atlantic Bonito in May and June and the Black Bass during the month of February.
