History

Don José de Escandón founded Ocampo on May 19th, 1749 with the name of Santa Bárbara on the place called Tanguanchín, where 460 families from Cd. Valles had established themselves. A year later, the Mission of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad Igollo was founded and congregated Indians from the Parnes and Janambres groups, this mission was administered by the priest Francisco Escandón Helguera, brother of the Count of Sierra Gorda. Due to a flooding, in 1757 the village and the mission were relocated to their actual site. The richness of the lands of this region made this town prosper and to add to the development of the Nuevo Santander (today the State of Tamaulipas). Since 1869, the village was renamed Ocampo, in memory of Melchor Ocampo, the illustrious reformist and in 1898 it received the rank of City.
