Gonzalez

González is a municipality located at the southern part of the state. It has a territorial extension of 3,491 Km2, being its head the town of Villa González located at an elevation of 56 masl. The municipality is crossed in 66 Km by the federal highway 80 Tampico-Mante, and 44 Km by the highway 180 and 6 Km by the Manuel - Aldama highway. In addition it has a numerous network of secondary unpaved roads. Its average annual temperature is 25°C, it is integrated by 30 small population centers being the most important Villa González, Estación Manuel, Graciano Sánchez, Lopez Rayón and Francisco I. Madero. The main hydrological system is the Guayalejo River. The Ramiro Caballero Dam with a capacity of 508 cubic meters and the San Lorenzo and Venustiano Carranza dams. González has very fertile land, apt for agriculture and cattle. At its center the Bernal de Horcasitas is located with an altitude of 1,116 masl being a landmark for our state. By its originality and geographic characteristics was chosen in 1938 by the State Congress, being at that time governor, Mr. Marte R. Gómez to be part of the Shield of Arms from the State of Tamaulipas.

 

Historia

Today's González municipality dates back years before the Spanish Conquest, proof of that are the prehispanic finds that are still located inside its territory like the ones at Los Laureles, San Antonio and Los Frailes. González was originally a railroad station, named for being in the land of Sucesión González, a property of the General Manuel González Aldama. Villa de San Juan Bautista de Horcasitas was founded first on May 11th, 1749, by the Capital José Antonio Ollervides. Later, it s was renamed Magiscatzin being the head site of the municipality until October 14th, 1927 when by the State Congress it was changed from Magiscatzin to González.
