Antiguo Morelos

The Antiguo Morelos Municipality is composed by 136 small population centers, being the main center the town with the same name that is its municipality head (municipality is some what similar to county). It is located at the southern part of the State of Tamaulipas, bordering to the south with the State of San Luis Potosí. It has a territorial area of 561.30 Km2 and seats at an elevation of 178 masl. Its main economic activity is agriculture. It is connected through two highways that crosses through its territory, number 80 México-Laredo and number 85 Mante-San Luis Potosí, that goes from the east to the west.
History
Antiguo Morelos (Old Morelos) was founded on May 6th, 1821 with the name of Baltazar at the site that since 1751 was the center for the Santa Bárbara Congregation. By Congress decree, the State conferred it the title of Villa Morelos on 1828 in honor to the hero of the Independence, Don José María Morelos y Pavón, at has been known since 1860 as the Antiguo Morelos when the Villa de Nuevo Morelos was founded.
El Oyul Dam

This dam is located one kilometer from Antiguo Morelos on Highway 85 to Cd. Valles. It has palapas (palm leaf umbrellas) and barbecue grills, making it an ideal place for picnics.
